Registration at the Dougherty Arts Center for my summer class, “Painting for Beginners” begins May 29.

My Teaching Statement

At AMMO Art School I to teach art and art history and inspire creativity.  Teaching visual art helps me contribute to my community.  I believe art is an urgent form of self-expression for children and for adults and can make an essential contribution to a thriving community.

In my classroom, I teach numerous methods for art making and share my knowledge of art history to offer a well-rounded learning experience. An important goal for me as a teacher is to show people how to make art a part of their lives every day.   I have the ability to teach students the basics of drawing, painting, site-specific and interactive art.  I also teach students how to talk about their artwork and the artwork of others. With this approach, students develop public speaking skills and confidence in discussing art, making them better communicators.  For many years I have provided virtual and in person art lessons in my studio and at the Dougherty Arts Center and at the Center for the Study of the Southwest and The University of Texas at Austin. I volunteer at the Blanton Museum of Art, helping visitors enjoy and learn from Ellsworth Kelly’s, Austin. I am also a contributor of art and wearable scuIpture to the Women and Their Work Gallery. I guide students to learn to create an art practice, to learn how that practice becomes a collection of art and then I show them how to install their own accompanying exhibition, creating a well-rounded art experience.

My classes at the Dougherty Arts Center include Painting for Beginners, Painting 1.5, Mindfulness and Memory in Painting and Drawing, Explore the Self-Portrait, and Paint and Draw like Vincent Van Gogh. My classes at the DAC are 3-hour studios Tuesday mornings and evenings and Thursday evenings.
